#13 Braves are Defeated in the KCAC Tournament Semifinals by Kansas Wesleyan, 6-4

GREAT BEND, Kan. – The Ottawa University baseball team fell short in the KCAC Tournament semifinals on Sunday afternoon, 6-4, to Kansas Wesleyan University.

Ottawa struck first taking the early lead in the top of the first inning. Jonah Weisner was hit by a pitch to lead off the game. He then stole second, giving the Braves a runner in scoring position. Tyler Farnham's bunt single moved Weisner to third. Carson Johnson scored Weisner from third with an infield single and OU led 1-0.

In the bottom of the third, Kansas Wesleyan scored three runs to take a 3-1 lead over the Braves. Ottawa cut into the deficit in the top of the fourth. Nicholas Sizemore reached first on an error by the KWU short stop and Brad Grant entered as a courtesy runner. A ground out to second by Matthew Aguilar moved Grant to second. Connor Jeffers scored Grant with a double to left and the Braves were within 3-2.

The Coyotes scored three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, pushing its lead to 6-2. In the top of the seventh Ottawa cut into the KWU lead. With two outs, Weisner singled to left. Tyler Farnham singled up the middle, moving Weisner to second. A throwing error by the Coyotes, moved Weisner to third and Farnham to second. Carson Johnson hit a double off the center field wall, scoring both Weisner and Farnham to put OU within 6-4.

In the ninth, Johnson reached first with a single to left but the Braves were not able to score him as Kansas Wesleyan took the 6-4 victory.

  • Both teams finished the game with 10 hits apiece.
  • Carson Johnson had four hits in five at bats and three RBI.
  • Stephen Norrell pitched in 4.1 innings, striking out six.
  • Jeremy Husband and Creede Jeffers appeared in relief. Husband pitched 2.2 innings, striking out four and only allowing one hit. Jeffers pitched the eighth and struck out three.
