Athletic Program Substance Abuse Committee

 PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT

Ottawa University Athletic Department is concerned with the health, safety and welfare of the student-athletes who participate in its programs and represent the college in competitive athletics. The following policy statement has been adopted and shall be administered by the Ottawa University Athletic Department.

Ottawa University reserves the right to make changes to this policy as needed, and nothing in these procedures shall be construed to create a contract between student-athletes and Ottawa University. However, signed consent and notification forms shall be considered affirmation of the student-athlete's agreement to the terms and conditions contained therein and to this policy and these procedures. Please note that this policy represents the Ottawa University Substance Abuse Education and Testing program, which is separate and distinct from the NAIA Substance Abuse Program. Information regarding the NAIA Substance Abuse Program is available in the NAIA Official Policy Handbook which can be accessed at www.naia.org.

Substance abuse is one of the most important issues facing athletics and society today. The use of illegal drugs, misuse of legal drugs and dietary supplements, use of performance-enhancing substances, use of alcohol and inappropriate use of tobacco are inconsistent with the standards expected of student-athletes at Ottawa University. Substance use and abuse in sport can pose risks to a student-athlete's health/safety and can negatively affect his/her academic and athletic performance. Substance use and abuse in sport also compromises the integrity of athletic competition and the ideals of Ottawa University and its Athletic Department.

It is the intent of the Ottawa University Athletic Department to have an effective substance abuse program that will educate student-athletes about the dangers of substance abuse and therefore, deter its use to a level that will protect the health and well-being of all student-athletes who are representatives of Ottawa University, as well as help ensure the high ideals and expectations of Ottawa University.
