ALCOHOL, TOBACCO AND OTHER DRUG EDUCATION
It is the responsibility of every member of the OUKS community to be aware of the risks associated with alcohol use and abuse. Consistent with the OUKS community, the Department of Athletics views the use of alcohol to be incompatible with the goal of athletic excellence. Student-athletes are required to conduct themselves in accordance with institutional policies, and federal, state and local laws.
This policy should be viewed in the context that lawful responsible consumption (below KS Limit of .08) or abstinence is expected from the student-athlete and that consumption and/or possession of alcohol by minors in the State of Kansas is illegal.
This extends to the recruitment of prospective Ottawa University student-athletes. Prospective student-athletes visiting campus and socializing with current students are not permitted to participate in any activities that will permit the use of alcohol. It should be understood that possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages by individuals under the age of 21 is a violation of state liquor laws (Minor in Possession/MIP). Likewise, it is illegal for anyone to supply alcoholic beverages to persons under the age of 21.
Ottawa University is a dry campus with the exception of some apartments located in Ottawa University's off-campus housing. Student-athletes who violate the Ottawa University Student Code of Conduct regarding alcohol will receive an official warning from the Athletic Department in addition to the sanctions enforced by the Office of Student Affairs. A second on-campus violation regarding alcohol will result in a documented first offense of this policy and sanctions will athletic sanctions will be enforced as outlined in this policy in addition to the Office of Student Affairs’ sanctions.
Refer to the OU Student Code of Conduct in the OUKS Student Handbook for details.
