(17) Softball Takes Game 1 Vs. Friends

OTTAWA, Kan. – The (17) Ottawa University softball team split its double header with Friends University on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Park. The Braves won game one, 2-0, but fell in eight innings, 6-3, in game two. After the split, the Braves have a one game lead over Friends in the KCAC standings.  

Game One
Ottawa took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Riley Newbold led OU off with an infield single. Katie Enneking reached first on a bunt, moving Newbold to second. A walk by Allison Kearney loaded the bases for the Braves. Newbold scored on a wild throw by the Falcon catcher to the pitcher and OU had a 1-0 lead.

The Braves increased their lead over the Falcons in the bottom of the third inning. An infield single and two straight stolen bases by Newbold gave OU a runner at third. Madison Bunfill walked, and the Braves had runners on the corners. OU then executed a double steal and Newbold crossed home plate to give the Braves a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, the Falcons had a scoring threat with runners at first and second with one out. A line out and a strike out ended the inning. In the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings it was three up and three down for the Ottawa defense as the Braves took the 2-0 victory.

  • Riley Newbold went 2-for-3 at the late, scoring OU's two runs.
  • Ashlynn Mercer pitched seven innings in the win, striking out five and only allowing three hits.
Game Two
The Braves struck first, taking the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Madison Bunfill walked and then moved to second on a single up the middle by Hannah Copeland. A Kelcie Kippes ground out moved Bunfill to third and Copeland to second. Emma Ryan scored Bunill with an infield single and Ottawa had a 1-0 lead. Macey Morris followed that with a bunt single to third. The throw by the Falcon third baseman was wild and Copeland scored to give the Braves a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, the Braves increased their lead over the Falcons. Allison Kearney hit a home run over the center field fence and Ottawa led 3-0.

In the top of the fourth, Friends cut into the Brave lead with two runs, 3-2. The Falcons tied the game in the top of the fifth, 3-3.

That is where the score stayed until the eighth. Friends was able to score three runs, taking a 6-3 lead over the Braves. Ottawa was not able to rally in the bottom of the eighth and the Falcons took 6-3 victory.

  • Kelcie Kippes pitched in four innings, striking out two.
  • Loralei Gilbert struck out four in four innings.

Ottawa (31-6, 14-2) returns to the diamond on Saturday, April 15 against McPherson College in McPherson, Kan. Game one of the double header is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
