Women's Flag Football Defeats Cottey, Plays KWU in KCAC Championship Game

LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. – The Ottawa University women's flag football team moved on to the KCAC Tournament Championship Game with a 61-6 victory over Cottey College at Paragon Star on Friday afternoon.

Ottawa received the ball to start the game. Four plays later, Madysen Carrera completed a 10 yard touchdown pass to Bailey Hodgins. The extra point attempt was good and the Braves had a 7-0 lead with 9:57 left in the first quarter.

The OU defense forced a Comet punt and the Braves took over on its own 24 yard line. Four plays later, much like the first drive, Ottawa was in the end zone. Carrera pitched the ball to Mandolyn Scalisi and she scored from five yards out. Carrera's PAT attempt was good and with 5:18 remaining in the first quarter, Ottawa led 14-0.

The Brave defense forced a second straight Cottey punt, holding CC to three plays for a negative one yard of offense. This touchdown drive took five plays. Carrera threw a three yard touchdown pass to Alyssa Linkous and after the extra point, Ottawa had a 21-0 lead over Cottey with 1:20 left in the first quarter of play.

A three and out by the Comets gave OU the ball back on the CC 26 yard line. After a false start by OU, Carrera threw a 31 yard touchdown pass to Tatiana Dos Santos. The extra point attempt was good and Ottawa had a 28-0 lead over Cottey with 11:35 remaining in the half.

Three plays into Cottey's next drive, Ottawa's defense forced the turnover and had a pick six. Lauren Clarke intercepted the ball on the Comet 24 yard line. She returned it for the touchdown. Mya Quinn's extra point attempt was good and Ottawa had a 35-0 lead over Cottey with 10:22 left in the second quarter.

The OU defense forced another Cottey punt, resulting in another Brave touchdown. Carrera threw a 39 yard touchdown pass to Quinn. The Carrera extra point was good, giving the Braves a 42-0 lead over Cottey with 8:32 on the clock in the second quarter.

Ottawa's defense forced a fifth Cottey punt and the Braves took over on the CC 29 yard line. Four plays and 42 yards later, Ottawa was back in the endzone. Carrera threw a two yard touchdown pass to Addison Orsborn. The extra point attempt was good and Ottawa had a 49-0 lead over the Comets with 4:34 left in the half.

On the next Cottey offensive possession, the Comets moved the ball to the OU two yard line. On the ninth play of the drive, Faron Malouff intercepted the pass and Ottawa took over. The Braves ran out the clock, taking the 49-0 lead into the locker room.

Cottey received the ball to start the second half. The Comets put together a seven play, 66 yard drive that ended in the end zone. Jennifer Haberstock threw a 47 yard touchdown pass to Amya Corulla. The extra point attempt was not good and with 8:37 to go in the third, Ottawa's lead was cut 49-6.

It did not take the Braves long to answer. Ottawa together a seven play, 66 yard drive of its own, ending with a six yard Randrea Gamble touchdown run. The PAT attempt was no good and at the 5:12 mark in the third quarter, Ottawa led 55-6.

OU's defense forced the sixth punt of the night by the Comets and the Braves took over on their own 22 yard line. Quinn ended the six play drive with a 27 yards touchdown pass to Scalisi and OU took the lead and the game, 61-6.

  • The Braves finished the game with 439 yards, 388 through the air and 51 yards rushing. The OU defense held Cottey to 184 yards of offense, (-)17 rushing and 201 yards passing.
  • Madysen Carrera led OU in rushing with 16 yards. Carrera also threw for 266 yards (19-for-21) and five touchdowns. Mya Quinn went 8-for-11 through the air for 104 yards and a touchdown.
  • Mandolyn Scalisi had six receptions for 65 yards and a touchdown. Tatiana Dos Santos finished with four receptions for 95 yards and a touchdown.
  • Abby Brown led OU with seven tackles.
  • Jukanie Washington and Dejonice Parris had six tackles apiece. Parris finished the game with two sacks and three tackles for loss.

Ottawa (13-0) will play Kansas Wesleyan University in the KCAC Tournament Championship game on Saturday, April 29 at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
