LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Ottawa University women's basketball team won its second straight game, taking an 85-71 victory over Haskell Indian Nations University on Monday night at the Coffin Sports Complex.
Ottawa took the early 10 point lead over Haskell in the opening minutes of the first quarter. The Braves increased their lead over Haskell to 20 points on a basket by
Sydney Scott, 24-4 with 1:59 left in the first quarter. HINU cut the Brave lead to 15 points but
Dominique Schutte scored the final basket of the quarter, a three, to give OU a 29-11 lead at the start of the second.
OU pushed its lead to 25 points, 36-11, on a basket by
Kennedy Bankett in the second quarter. Haskell did not go away and cut the Brave lead to 13 points, 42-29 with 2:03 left in the first half. Ottawa scored the next five points, increasing its lead to 47-29 with 38 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Haskell's three by Wakiyan Irving with seven seconds on the clock cut the Brave lead to 15 points and OU took a 47-32 lead into the locker room.
Haskell continued to chip away at the OU lead in the third quarter and were within 50-40 with 6:09 left in the third. Ottawa responded by scoring seven straight points, taking a 57-40 lead on a basket by
Anna Eldridge. HINU cut OU's lead to 15 points with 1:12 left in the third quarter. OU scored the final three points of the quarter on free throws by Bankett to take a 66-48 lead into the fourth.
Abbie Sextro's basket with 6:07 left in the game gave OU a 72-51 lead. Haskell never threatened the Brave lead in the final six minutes of the game and Ottawa was able to empty its bench, taking the 85-71 victory.
