(23) Softball Takes Two From Kansas Wesleyan

Jay Kahnt Earns Win No. 600

SALINA, Kan. – The (23) Ottawa University softball team swept Kansas Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon at Salina South High School. Ottawa won game one, 4-3, and took game two, 9-0. The sweep gave OU head coach, Jay Kahnt, career win no. 600.

Game One

The Braves struck first, taking the lead in the top of the first. Addison Spencer doubled to center and then moved to third on Katie Enneking's fly out to center. Kara Hafenstine scored Spencer with a double down the left field line and the Braves led 1-0.

Kansas Wesleyan scored two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead. Ottawa answered by tying the game in the top of the fourth. Reagan Hammons connected on her eighth home run of the season and tied the game, 2-2.

In the bottom of the fourth, Kansas Wesleyan retook the lead, 3-2. The Braves responded with two runs in the top of the fifth. Rachel Pederson doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning. Macy Roever reached first on a throwing error by the KWU third baseman. Pederson took advantage of the miscue and tied the game, 3-3. Ottawa retook the lead on Spencer's single to right. That hit scored Roever and the Braves led 4-3.

The Coyotes tried to rally in the bottom seventh. KWU had runners on the corners with two outs. Ashlynn Mercer struck out KWU's Sydnee Fordham and the Braves took the 4-3 victory.

Game Two

Ottawa's offense exploded for five runs in the top of the first to give the Braves the early lead. Macy Roever singled up the middle and then quickly stole second. Addison Spencer singled, moving Roever to third. An error by the KWU short stop scored Roever and OU led 1-0.

Katie Enneking's ground out to second put Spencer 60 feet from home. Kara Hafenstine put the ball in play, scoring Spencer and the Braves had a 2-0 lead. Morgan Bradford scored two runs with a single up the middle, giving OU a 4-0 lead. Megan Kennedy's single scored Bradford and the Braves led 5-0.

In the top of the fifth, Ottawa extended its lead over Kansas Wesleyan. Hafenstine singled up the middle, stole second, and moved to third on a throwing error by the KWU catcher. Reagan Hammons' sacrifice fly to center scored Hafenstine and OU led 6-0.

Nayely Delgado walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Bradford's single to center scored Delgado, giving OU a 7-0 lead.

The Braves pushed two more runs across home plate in the top of the seventh. Hafenstine doubled down the left field line. Hammons sent her ninth home run of the season over the center field fence and the Braves took the lead and the game, 9-0.

Ottawa (22-10, 6-2) returns to the diamond on Tuesday, March 26 against Oklahoma Wesleyan University in Bartlesville, Okla. Game one of the double header is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
