(23) Softball Sweeps Bethel

OTTAWA, Kan. – The (23) Ottawa University softball team took two from Bethel College on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Park. The Braves won game one, 4-2 and took game two, 5-0.

Game One
Bethel struck first, taking a 2-0 lead over the Braves in the top of the third inning. Ottawa answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Emma Melvin singled to left and CaiLyn Nye entered the game as a pinch runner. Cierra Faubion walked and OU had runners on first and second. Megan Kennedy bunted and reached first on an error by the BC pitcher. Nye took advantage of the Thresher miscue and scored, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Another error by the Threshers scored Faubion, tying the game, 2-2. Ottawa scored the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to right by Katie Enneking. Her sacrifice fly scored Kennedy, giving OU a 3-2 lead.

Ottawa increased its lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Rachel Pederson doubled to left. Addison Spencer followed that with a double of her own, scoring Pederson and OU led 4-2. In the top of the seventh it was three up and three down for Threshers in their final at bat of the game and Ottawa took the 4-2 victory.

Inside the Box Score Game Two
Ottawa took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Addison Spener doubled to center and then moved to third on a ground out to short stop by Katie Enneking. Kara Hafenstine's infield single scored Spencer, giving OU a 1-0 lead. Reagan Hammon's single to left gave OU runners on first and second. Nayely Delgado's single to left scored Hafenstine and Ottawa had a 2-0 lead.

The Braves increased their lead over the Threshers in the bottom of the fourth. Morgan Bradford hit her second home run of the season and OU led 3-0. Megan Kennedy singled to center and moved to second on a fielder's choice by Rachel Pederson. Macy Roever's single to right scored Kennedy and the Braves had a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Braves pushed one more run across home plate. Katie Enneking reached first on a walk. Hafenstine's sacrifice bunt moved Enneking to second. Delgado scored Enneking with a single to left, giving the Braves a 5-0 lead.

A Threshers did notreach base in their final two at bats and the Braves took the 5-0 victory.

  • Nayely Delgado went 2-for-3 at the plate, driving in two runs.
  • Madison Carney pitched seven innings in the win, striking out four. She only allowed one hit.

Ottawa (25-11, 9-3) returns to the diamond on Wednesday, April 3 at Avila University. Game one of the double header is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
