Women's Basketball is Defeated in Overtime by OKWU, 86-80

OTTAWA, Kan. – The Ottawa University women's basketball team fell 86-80 to Oklahoma Wesleyan University in overtime on Wednesday night in Wilson Field House.

A basket by Janiyah Hendricks gave OU a 7-3 lead over OKWU in the first quarter. The Eagles went on a mini run, outscoring the Braves 7-2 to take a 10-9 lead over OU with 5:03 remaining in the first quarter. Ottawa scored the next four points, retaking the lead 13-10. OKWU cut into OU's lead and were within one point, 15-14, with 36 seconds on the clock.

Ottawa was able to extend their lead on its next offensive possession. Dominique Schutte hit a three off an offensive rebound by Tiyani Rollins and the Braves took an 18-14 lead into the second.
The Braves increased their lead to eight points on a three by Schutte with 3:01 left in the half, 31-23. The Eagles rallied, scoring the next six points to cut OU's lead to 31-29. Another three by Schutte increased the Brave lead to 34-29 with 46 seconds remaining in the second quarter.

OKWU's Rashaan Smith put the Eagles within three points, 34-31, with 32 seconds on the clock. The Braves were able to execute in the final seconds of the half. Hendricks connected on a jumper and OU took a 36-31 lead into the locker room.

Ottawa pushed its lead to seven points, 42-35, on a basket by Abbie Sextro at the start of the third quarter. The Eagles responded with a 13-5 run, taking a 48-47 lead over the Braves with 2:51 left in the third quarter. A free throw from Anna Eldridge tied the game at 48 all. The teams exchanged baskets and the contest was tied, for the fifth time, at 51 apiece.

The Eagles scored the next three points, to retake the lead 54-51. The Braves were able to cut into the OKWU lead at the end of the third. Sextro found a cutting Ford for two and OU was down 54-53 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Ottawa opened the final quarter of play on a 11-5 run, taking a 64-58 lead over OKWU. The Eagles answered with a run of their own, 7-0, to take a 65-64 lead over the Braves with 2:26 left in regulation.

OU retook the lead on a Sextro basket, 66-65. Oklahoma Wesleyan scored the next four points, retaking the lead 69-66 with 11 seconds on the clock. After a Brave timeout, Hendricks found Ford at the top of the key. Her shot attempt was good and the game was tied 69-69 with eight seconds on the clock. OKWU had a good look at the basket as the buzzer sounded but Gracie Alexander's shot attempt was no good and the game went into overtime.

The Eagles started the overtime period on a 10-2 run, taking a 79-71 lead over the Braves. Ottawa was not able to recover from its slow start and OKWU took the victory, 86-80.
